It is estimated that over 40% of South African women will be raped in their lifetime and that only 1 in 9 rapes are reported. It is also estimated that 14% of perpetrators of rape are convicted in South Africa.
We are still far from resolving the issue of GBV as the society has decided on a permanent victim and permanent perpetrator. We are dealing with the problem and we are not dealing with the root cause of the problem. No man was born a rapist or an abuser, but something gives birth to the behaviour. We need to start digging deep and unpacking on possible solutions to end GBV. Another issue is that, we are not pro-actively involved in find solutions to the GBV, we are reactive to the issues.
